2015 Volvo XC90 Review

BMW X5 vs Volvo XC90 Overview

Right before the concept of the crossover sports utility vehicle hit its stride in the United States, luxury automakers BMW and Volvo released their versions: the X5 and the XC90, respectively. BMW had the head start, debuting the X5 in 1999; the Volvo XC90 followed three years later. Today, the 2016 BMW X5 represents the vehicle’s third generation of production, while the 2016 Volvo XC90 is part of the nameplate’s second production cycle. Over the years, each vehicle has embodied the ideal crossover SUV: the ability to maintain the appearance of an off-road vehicle while driving like a refined family-friendly sedan. However, one edges out the other in overall value—and the victor is the BMW X5.

Performance

The most significant differentiating factor is engine choice. The 2016 BMW X5 offers three: a 3.0-liter intercooled turbo inline six-cylinder (I-6), a 3.0-liter twin turbocharged diesel I-6, and a 4.4-liter twin turbocharged V8. The intercooled feature is particularly crucial, since it keeps the engine from overheating, consequently reducing the risk of malfunction. The 2016 Volvo XC90, on the other hand, only has a 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine.

Specs

There’s also sheer power. The most powerful X5 engine choice pumps out 445 horsepower at 5,500 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 480 foot-pounds (lb-ft) of torque at 2,000 RPM. The lone engine that the XC90 offers 316 horsepower at 5,700 RPM and 295 lb-ft of torque at 2,200 RPM. Plus, at displacements of 3.0 liters and 4.4 liters, the X5 engines dwarf the 2.0-liter XC90 engine in size. Thus the 2016 BMW X5, by comparison, offers better performance in terms of acceleration, switching lanes, driving off-road or even towing.

Features

With luxury vehicles, it is extremely important that no premium component is minimized or left out. For the most part, the 2016 BMW X5 and the 2016 Volvo XC90 meet expectations: with features that include power seat adjustability, front fog lights, multi-speaker stereo system, huge aluminum wheels, and integrated touchscreen navigation system. However, while genuine wood console and dashboard inserts line the interior of the BMW vehicle, they are not even an option, let alone a standard feature, on one of the Volvo XC90 trims. Moreover, you can add cooling capability on the front seats of the X5, regardless of trim, but it is unavailable on two of the three XC90 models. It is these omissions that leave the Volvo SUV, comparatively speaking, with less to offer regarding luxury and convenience
