2017 BMW 340i and BMW 330i should both be on top of your list if you are shopping for compact luxury sedans. They both offer a tempting balance of performance and luxury that you would not find in any car in their class. They both belong to the 3 Series family, and they remain industry favorites. Although they both replace older models, they manage to retain BMW distinctive sports-sedan personality, versatility, and dependability.

Performance

Both 2017 BMW 340i and 2017 BMW 330i are equipped with engines that offer power, smoothness, and fuel efficiency. The 330i replaces last year's 328i just before the makeover that is scheduled for the 2018 model year. It is available with a 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder that returns 252 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is a noticeable improvement from the 240 hp and 255 lb-ft of the predecessor. Meanwhile, the 340i is an upgrade to the older 335i model and employs a 3.0-liter turbo 6-cylinder delivering 326 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. It makes a dash from zero to 60 mph in the mid-4-second range.

Both trims come standard with an RWD drivetrain, and the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is also offered as an option. Drivers are at liberty to choose between an optional six-speed manual and the standard eight-speed automatic. Being the more performance focused trim, the 2017 BMW 340i offers lower mpg ratings when compared to the BMW 330i.

Appearance

Both cars are produced in 4-door sedan and wagon body styles. They feature redesigned bumpers and extended hoods that give them a more elegant appearance compared to previous models. The new headlights also help to emphasize their dynamism. Although they come with a longer wheelbase, their weights are less than those of their predecessors. Both cars retain the traditional BMW look although the body is more rigid and firm. They come standard with 17-inch alloy wheels with run-flat tires although 18-inch wheels are available.

Safety

2017 BMW 340i and 2017 BMW 330i come standard with traction and stability control, antilock brakes, side curtain airbags, and front side and knee airbags. BMW Assist emergency communication is fitted standard and includes stolen vehicle recovery, automatic crash notification, and on-demand roadside assistance. They both received five stars for both total side-impact protection and overall crash protection and four stars for total front-impact protection in government crash testing. Their sedan variations also received the highest possible rating of Good in IIHS' tests for moderate overlap front-impact, side-impact, whiplash protection, and roof strength. In Edmunds brake testing, 340i and 330i sedans with summer tires stopped from 60 mph in 109 feet; these are excellent stopping distances. With all-season tires, the same cars took 113 feet, which is better than most rivals with all-seasons.

Optional safety equipment includes a rearview camera, surround-view and side-view cameras, parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision mitigation and warning, a lane departure warning system, and automatic braking.
