2017 BMW X3 vs 2017 Acura RDX

Serving Tallahassee, Valdosta, Thomasville, Quincy, Bainbridge

The BMW X3 and Acura RDX are both compact luxury crossover SUVs that are appealing to consumers because of their fuel efficiency, powerful engines, all-weather capability, and ample storage space. While both vehicles are great choices for those in the market for a compact luxury crossover SUV, the X3 offers many more powertrain options, has more cargo space, and offers more interior options for comfort, convenience, and safety at its base model level.

Cargo Space

Consumers who like having a lot of room in their vehicles will not be disappointed with the BMW X3. Including seat area, the X3 has 63.3 cubic feet of cargo space, whereas the RDX has only 61.3 cubic feet. That extra 2 cubic feet can make a difference between passengers who feel cramped and those who feel comfortable or taking that one extra suitcase versus leaving it behind. Without the seat area, the X3 still has more cargo space volume - 27.6 ft3, while the RDX has only 26.1 ft3.

Powertrain Options

BMW offers no shortage of powertrain options for the X3. While RDX owners have no choice but to be equipped with Acura’s 3.5 L V6, the X3 is offered with many different powertrains, including a diesel option. Drivers can also choose from a fuel efficient turbocharged, intercooled inline 4 cylinder engine. Their inline 6 cylinder version produces lots of low-end torque and more horsepower than the comparable V6 engine that sits in the Acura RDX. In comparing both 6 cylinder models, the X3 produces 300 hp at 6200 rpm, while the RDX produces only 279 hp at 6200 rpm. In addition, the X3 low-end torque rating is much better, producing 300 ft.-lbs. at 1300 rpm, while the RDX’s peak torque is on the higher end - producing 252 ft.-lbs. at 4900 rpm.

Regardless of which engine BMW X3 customers choose from, each of them is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Acura’s V6, on the other hand, mates to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The X3 is taller, longer, and has a greater ground clearance - 8.3 inches versus the RDX’s 5.4” of ground clearance. Those who enjoy off-road adventures will find the X3 easier to maneuver on uneven terrain.

Interior Options

One feature that makes the X3 stand out is the BMW Assist Package, standard on all BMW vehicles. It provides roadside assistance and a navigation interface, as well as several infotainment options. The RDX does not have an equivalent for these safety and convenience features at its base model level.
